Small Groups Team Leader Proposal

by David Howard ... April 2006

I will preface the following by saying that these are concepts. The logistics of fleshing some of them out may not be possible at the present time, but may be possible on down the road as our church grows. I believe the existing small groups activites could also be improved upon. So I don't see the need for eliminating any of the existing programs.

Proposed New Programs:

#1 Dine Out Social (offical name to be decided later)

Once a month the group (couples and singles who have signed up to participate) will dine at area restaurants. Couples/singles will pay an upfront fee to cover the cost of the dinner. At the moment I'm thinking of the cost to be $20 for singles and $30 for couples. This may be modified at some point as a feel for the actual cost becomes evident. I view this as a time for more social interaction among members. If the activity can afford it, we might offer a babysitter for those who have childfen and wish to participate.

#2 How to Better Your Relationship with Your Partner Class

I believe we need to equip our membership to build lasting relationships. Instead of the short lived relationships that typecasts us by the straight world.

#3 Weekly Exercise Class

An opportunity to enrich the bodies of our membership as well as their souls.

#4 Singles Group

The social pressures that face the single members of our congregation make it difficult to find that special someone without having to resort to the bar scene. I don't want this to end up being a means for individuals to find a quick hook-up. I propose that individuals wishing to participate will have to sign a form stating the purpose of the group and what the objectives are. A dual puppose of the group would be social outings as a group.

#5 Crisis Hotline

I know there already exists a service in this area where a person can call and talk about whatever problem they are facing. A lot of individuals, like myself, are hesitate to call it because they may feel that the service would {not} be able to help because they really don't understand the issues that the GLBT community face. This concept may be more of a long term goal as it will require resources and solid planning.

#6 Child Rearing Class

Parents in this day and age face a trying task in raising children. GLBT parents face more issues than their straight counterparts. They need available to them resources and skills to help them raise well adjusted kids.

#7 Getting to Know Members Round Robin Social

To aid our membership in getting to know other members better I propose a social activity. The activity would be 3 months in duration. Those who signed up to participate would be divided into groups of three. The groups would meet once a month. The outings could be a dinner at a groups member's home, a movie, an evening out, or whatever. The idea being that each group member take a month and host that month's outing.

Existing Program Changes:

#1 Bible Study Class

I propose that Bible Study Class be moved to a different day of the week. The current Tuesday night arrangement doesn't appear to be working. The monthly Board meeting conflicts with the class and seems to hamper membership participation. Maybe if it were moved to Wednesday, participation might improve.

#2 Fun Filled Fridays

I believe the program could be expanded to include activites outside of the church. Maybe hosting FFF off-site or have a movie night or a theater night could be possibilities.

I'm not completely familar with the other programs covered by the team, but feel that futher change may only be necessary after closer examination. This concludes my ideas and concepts of possible ninistry opportunities for the Small Groups Team. Thank you for your time and consideration in reading this proposal.
